Expat Question of the Month

The restaurant and entertainment scenes in Kyiv have seemed to explode in the past two to three years. Old expat hands, say those few going back to independence or shortly thereafter, and those of more recent vintage, say four or five years, are somewhat amazed. Who among them doesn't remember the relative scarcity of such establishments as well as the problems (e.g. from being practically strip searched by armed cretins to enter an entertainment facility to waiters and waitresses without a clue as to the meaning of prompt and courteous service at dining establishments where food of mixed and uneven quality would be presented for their consumption and "pleasure"). Well, we at the UO believe it evident that substantial progress has been made. So we think it time to solicit the views of our Readers on the current situation.
In this we think it unfair to compare our "fare" capital to such much larger and experienced Western capitals such as Paris, Washington, London or even recently revitalized Berlin. Nor is a comparison with cities of renowned reputations such as New York, Chicago, Toronto, Barcelona, New Orleans, Prague et al. worthwhile. In short, the UO is thinking more of a progress report on our city with an understanding of where it was and what it has become. But we'd put a high bar or standard to the review with a view of where Kyiv needs to be to be not only fun and pleasurable and more enticing both to those of us who reside here as well as our international visitors. So we solicit comments and opinions as follows:

Report and comment on:

1. Variety, uniqueness in both entertainment and dining venues.
2. Service quality, food preparation and presentation, wine lists and cocktail offerings, etc.
3. Any other areas that deserve comment from sins of both "omission and commission".
4. What would you suggest for addition or improvement? What's missing?
5. Other thoughts?
6. Mention favorites and examples if you like.

Readers', comments please (not necessarily brief).
Remember, non-expats may respond also. If willing, Readers should identify themselves by nationality or citizenship to further interest in the answers. This is not a requirement at all, however. Respond to the Observer by e-mail address glen@twg.com.ua or by post address The Ukrainian Observer, 4/6 Desiatynna Str., Kyiv, 01025, Ukraine. Readers' responses will appear in the June '03 update of the UO.
