If there is ever an index produced showing the number of beauties per square unit, Ukraine would probably become one of the leaders. Ukrainian models have already won love and recognition around the world. Now Ukraine has obtained a chance to show new colors in the fields of beauty, style and fashion.
Fashion TV has opened its representative office in Ukraine thus bringing Ukraine to the world stage of fashion. UN Race for Life 2003- HIV/AIDS
A message from the United Nations in Ukraine
Since 2001, as part of a coordinated approach to the crucial issue of HIV/AIDS, the United Nations in Ukraine has organised an annual public awareness-raising event - the Race for Life. In 2002 more than 3600 participants and a number of generous sponsors, supported the race which raised US$8600 for the Lavra National AIDS Clinic and Hospice.
Epidemiologists now estimate that every 100th adult in Ukraine is HIV positive, and the country's infection rate is the fastest growing in the CIS region. Even more alarming is the fact that young people aged 15-29 are most at risk from HIV/AIDS. Over the past year, stronger measures have been taken by the government and other sectors in the fields of prevention and treatment, but there is still much to be done to prevent an epidemic on the scale seen in other parts of the world.
Managing HIV/AIDS makes sound business sense too; some firms have already started global workplace programmes educating staff and management on the issues of HIV/AIDS. These programmes are now being introduced in local firms and multinationals in Ukraine.
This year, Race for Life will take place on Sunday 21 September on Khreschatik. With the aim of sending the key message of 'It's your life... take control!' to the public, especially young people, the event will include the 3km run or walk, as well as an information fair and other related events. We hope to attract greater numbers of participants and spectators, more significant sponsorship, and raise funds for the Lavra Clinic and No. l Children's Hospital. - Amanda Pitt, Event Director
Editor's Note The Ukrainian Observer is proud to support this worthwhile endeavor of the United Nations in Ukraine. Our September issue will have more information on both HIV/AIDS in Ukraine and on the forthcoming race. In the meantime, all should mark their calendars for Sunday, September 21, 2003.
American Embassy refuses U.S. dollars
This story is as recent as mid-July and was relayed to the UO by an American citizen who visits Ukraine about twice a year. Seems the gentleman, quite distinguished and responsible looking, was having to make a payment in connection with an application. The clerk carefully examined the $100 bill (admittedly, he said, it was not a brand new bill; however, it was intact, had no marks on it, was uncut or deformed and was not even wrinkled). The man, experienced in the ways and arrogance of the embassy simply shook his head, produced an even newer bill (which, after careful examination was accepted) and went on his way.
Walter's Pizza Restaurant
The 10th of July was the grand opening of "WALTER'S" restaurant. The doors opened for all to enjoy fine Italian cuisine and the best authentic Italian pizza from the Northern Italy region. The pizza was baked in "Forno a Legna" a traditional wood fired oven. The decor of the restaurant is simply Italian, not over bearing or wasteful.
But it's not just the physical presents of the restaurant that attracts people, it's Walter Rossit who has dreamt of his cuisine concept from his childhood. Having started at 14 as a waiter, at 23 he already had a private restaurant "Venetian La Grota" near San Marco Square in the center of Venice. In the 1990's Walter was doing business in Kyiv, first with the Pechera, Flamingo, Zolotaya Rybka, Caravella, and then the Apollo - all well-known restaurants in Kyiv.
It can be said that it is like taking a gastronome trip to Venice with the delicious meat and fish dishes. Also impressive is Walter's in-house made mozzarella, pasta, gnocchi and ice cream. It is the opinion of the writer, this venue will not be just a flash in the pan but a thriving restaurant motored by the passion of its Chef Walter Rossit. - Robert Reed
