This story is as recent as mid-July and was relayed to the UO by an American citizen who visits Ukraine about twice a year. Seems the gentleman, quite distinguished and responsible looking, was having to make a payment in connection with an application. The clerk carefully examined the $100 bill (admittedly, he said, it was not a brand new bill; however, it was intact, had no marks on it, was uncut or deformed and was not even wrinkled). The man, experienced in the ways and arrogance of the embassy simply shook his head, produced an even newer bill (which, after careful examination was accepted) and went on his way.
