UO Publisher Michael Willard's exhibition People and Places was held at the L-Art Gallery at No. 2B Andreiyivskiy Uzviz in Kyiv on Jan. 21, 2004. Mike, better known on these pages as the author of various Random Notes columns, described his painting as a serious avocation. He began painting 11 years ago while living on his boat on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C.
During the three-day, one-artist show, seven paintings were sold with the proceeds going to The Willard Group Foundation to support a home for the elderly in Kyiv Oblast.
The exhibition was launched with a reception attended by more than 200 people, including government officials, art patrons, and members of the Ukrainian press. Mike came to Eastern Europe a decade ago. He is also the author of four non-fiction books, The Flak: a PR Journey; Dancing With the Bear: Crisis Management in Eastern Europe; The Accidental Headline (on media and issues training); and, due out in late 2004, A Portfolio Life:Surviving Professionally at Sixty.
The Schooner Bat'kivshchyna
Captain Biriukovych and crew have arrived in Australia. A three-sentence notice from one source received by e-mail on January 24th indicated the ship's arrival after a long and stormy sail from Auckland, New Zealand. The message did not indicate where the landfall was or exactly when. Just a note that a follow up e-mail would be sent with details. At the time the UO went to the printer, no word. A prior message from the Captain from Auckland indicated approximately 24 Ukrainian organizations had expressed interest in welcoming the voyagers. More next month or look for additional information as it comes in on our online Observer, the UOO at www.ukraine-observer.com).
Donate to the Discover Ukraine Expedition. Painlessly.
Just a sales promotion here really. But, as a part of the UO's subscription drive, we at The Ukrainian Observer are informing the Captain that his expedition will receive 25% of the subscription price of any subscription (whether print edition or online) he can obtain from those Ukrainian Aussies referred to above.
But, we'll up that amount to 50% for the cause if we can get a minimum of 100 new subscriptions out of "real" Ukrainians (for this purpose we'll include expats) in the next three months beginning February 1, 2004 through April 30, 2004. So help Ukraine. Help the Captain's mission. Remember: The Discover Ukraine Expedition tells the world of Ukraine and spreads the word "Ukraine is not Russia".
