Opinion Leaders Select Sen. Kerry

U.S. President George Bush and Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma have one thing in common: They don't do so well when it comes to surveys in Ukraine.

The Willard Group's survey, taken in coordination with The Ukrainian Observer, admittedly is not a scientific poll, but merely an expression of feelings from about one-third of what we call our committee of 300 opinion leaders.

In the last survey, the question was asked, "In a hypothetical contest between U.S. President George Bush and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, whom would you choose?" Eighty one per cent said Kerry, 19 per cent Bush. Kuchma rarely breaks single digits in surveys taken by numerous polling companies.

In this particular survey, 60 per cent of the respondents were Ukrainian, with the remaining 40 per cent being expats from various countries.

A plurality of our respondents, 33 percent, said the phrase "an international bully" best characterized the United States. However, almost an equal number, 29 per cent, felt that "bully" and "best hope in the fight against terrorism worldwide" described the U.S.

Those responding to a question about bureaucracy on the survey felt in equal numbers (11 per cent) that the greatest problems stemmed from dealing with the Ukrainian militia and from civil proceedings, such as marriages and adoptions. However, the survey obviously missed the boat in its limited options, in that 46 per cent listed "other" as the greatest bureaucratic problem.

Finally, given an unlimited budget, our respondents said the entertainment they would most want to see at Kyiv's Ukraine Palace -- by a narrow margin — was country singer Willie Nelson and country and pop cross-over singer Shania Twain. Lagging one per percentage point behind were Sting with Beyonce tied with Madonna with Britney Spears. If you would like to participate in the next survey, please contact: Oksana@twg.com.ua

As a token of our appreciation, an "Observer" mug is given away to five survey participants chosen randomly by computer.

U.S. Embassy at Work

The UO applauds the good work of U.S. Ambassador John Herbst and the embassy.
The ambassador, who only arrived in Kyiv last fall, was recently critical of practices used by the L'viv Tax Administration against Petro Poroshenko, a businessman-politician, from the area. Allegedly, the actions of the Tax Administration have been politically motivated. The Ambassador forcefully expressed his opinion to the effect that the tax authorities should not use their powers abusively for political ends. We congratulate the ambassador for speaking out and challenging the authorities on this issue.
