Most Doubt Yuschenko Will Be President

Former Prime Minister Victor Yuschenko may be Ukraine's most popular politician, but more than half the people responding to The Willard Group's Online Opinion Leader Survey doubt he will ever be president.

Ninety-two opinion leaders participated in the March survey which is co-sponored by The Ukrainian Observer and Willard News Service. While not a scientific poll, it is a sampling of the company's Committee of 300 opinion leader list.

The Yuschenko question was asked this way: In your opinion, given political realities, do you have confidence Victor Yuschenko will ever be president of Ukraine?

Forty-seven percent felt he had a "fair chance, though it is doubtful" while five percent said he would never be president. However, 35 per cent felt he had a good chance and another 13 per cent felt he definitely would be president.

Another question that elicited a divided response was on the question of same sex marriages. Fifty-three per cent of those responding said people of the same-sex should have the right to marry, while 47 per cent said they should not.

A question on the correct English spelling of the capital city of Ukraine, also drew a divided reaction. with a majority, 54 per cent, favoring the Kiev spelling while 41 percent preferred Kyiv. Another three percent felt Kyyiv was more correct.
