The Willard Group Survey Tackles Holidays, Kuchma and Charities

A simple majority of respondents to The Willard Group's Online Opinion Leader Survey believe Ukraine has about the same number of holidays as other European countries, but feel having people work on Saturdays and Sundays is counterproductive.

Some 42 percent of the respondents in the April survey, also done in concert with the Ukrainian Observer, felt Ukraine had about the same number of holidays as other countries while 39 percent thought there were too many holidays.

Forty-four per cent of the respondents said Americans work too hard and should relax more while a majority, 56 per cent, said the U.S. is an industrious nation, and it is no wonder it is a world power.

In terms of Ukrainian politics, 71 percent of those responding to the survey said they believe President Leonid Kuchma will not seek a third term, but that he will handpick his successor. Despite his promise not to run again, 21 percent believe the president will seek another term.

On another topic, those opinion leaders responding to the survey were equally divided, at 27 per cent each, between the question of giving more or less to charity. Twenty-seven percent said they give less than $25 a year to charity, while the same number said they give $500 or more.

However, on the whole, there is a distrust of Ukrainian charities. Seventy-two per cent said they did not trust giving to Ukrainian charities.
