The Captain and the Bat'kivshchyna
Captain Dymtro Biriukovych and his wife Nina returned from the Bat'kivshchyna in early April. The schooner remains in Sydney for now. She is moored without dock space and in need of repairs and new sails.
Dimitri and Nina as most Readers know have been sailing most of the past four years. They left Kyiv for New York Harbor and the OpSail 2000 Tall Ship events for America's Independence Day holiday celebration on April 7, 2000.
The Captain after getting some much-needed rest on his arrival is now planning a return to his "Discover Ukraine" expedition. This project has been and continues to educate as many has possible around the world about his beloved Ukraine. The adventure will continue. After battling and surviving a group of storms and two cyclones on his way from Auckland, New Zealand to Melbourne, he was forced to land in Sidney where the "fatherland" is moored.
In next month’s UO the story of the last four years will begin being told by the Captain himself. It is a great story and the telling will reveal the problems as well as the magnificent achievements of the voyage. Also, plans for the future will be outlined.
The Captain was announced as The Ukrainian Observer's Man of the Year in its January issue. We at the UO believe our Readers will understand even more why Captain Biriukovych was selected for that honor as his story is told and we continue to report.
