Bowling Gold

Bowling is becoming more popular in Ukraine, with new bowling centers on the drawing boards and the country's middle-class taking to the game.
The sport got a boost May 18-21 when bowlers from 24 nations arrived in Kyiv to compete in the Gold European Cup at Vitamin Bowling Club.
A Ukrainian bowler, 16-year-old Olexandr Kalika of Odessa, won the gold medal in the men's division. He credited his British coach, Brian Michel, with the win. Michael has coached Ukraine's national bowling team since 2002. Analysts say Kalika has a future as a professional bowler, a sentiment echoed by his coach.

"I think Sasha deserved to be the champion," he said. "He was the best bowler here. We are looking forward to him competing and winning at a higher level."
