Ukraine International Airlines commemorated new seven-day a week service between Kyiv and London with a party at the Gatwick Hilton on May 11. The party was attended by Ukraine's ambassador to Great Britain, aviation industry and local government officials and many of the passengers who frequently use the route.
UIA flies to London seven days a week, leaving Kyiv at 9 a.m. and returning from London's Gatwick Airport at noon.
Ukraine International Airlines was founded in 1992, one year after Ukraine became independent. It was one of the first joint ventures with foreign capital in Ukraine.
The founding shareholders of Ukraine International Airlines were the Ukrainian Association of Civil Aviation and Guinness Peat Aviation - an Irish aircraft leasing company. In 1996 Austrian Airlines and Swissair became shareholders, investing $9 million. In 2000, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development invested $5.4 million and became a shareholder as well.
Today, UIA's fleet consists of seven Boeing 737 aircraft. It operates direct flights to most major cities in Europe, operating more than 150 flights per week. In 2004, it began serving Kuwait and Tripoli. The airline also has developed a domestic network serving L'viv, Donetsk, Zaporyzhya and Simferopol.
Mainline Electronics Ukraine President John Higgins and Ukraine International Airlines Vice President Yuri Miroshnikov helped kick off the airline's daily Kyiv-London service at a party on May 11.
