U.S. citizens offered registration service

The U.S. State Department has launched a secure online travel registration Web site that allows American citizens to record foreign trip and residence information instead of registering with individual embassies when traveling. The government said that it would use the information to assist citizens during emergencies.

U.S. citizens around the world who travel or reside abroad can access this site at https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs.
American citizens in Ukraine who are already registered with the embassy should re-register online to update their records, the government said.

The new Internet travel registration service allows citizens to register or update contact information on the Internet at any time, making it easier to keep information current. The site also provides up-to-date travel information customized to citizens' unique travel agendas.

The data is secured behind State Department firewalls, and may be accessed only by selected personnel at embassies, consulates and the State Department. It is releasable only under the provisions of the Privacy Act.
