Bowling Leagues open in Kyiv

It wasn't too many years ago that bowling was unheard-of in Ukraine. Today, bowling centers are active in several cities, with new facilities - from three-lane mini-centers to large complexes - open now or under construction.

Kyiv's Strike Bowling Club inaugurated league play last year. In September, teams formed to kick of the second season.

Micheal Gorobeyko, Strike's sports manager, said that more than 300 players formed 60 teams last spring.

"Anybody can join, even beginners," Gorobeyko said. "Despite the fact that bowling has only a six-year history in Ukraine, the sport has attracted people of different ages."

Companies sponsoring employee teams at Strike include the Liniya 12 modeling agency, Pan Pizza and Golden Telecom.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:
As a new arrival to Kyiv and this part of the world I had the pleasure of discovering your magazine at a local restaurant in Kyiv. Upon reading The Ukrainian Observer I am pleased to say I have become a faithful reader and look forward to your publication. The magazine has been very informative and has provided me with insight into the Ukrainian culture and thinking.

In your last issue, you posted the results of a survey conducted regarding your readership, and I noticed that your female readership is somewhat lacking, which made me ponder why this demographic was significantly less. Being of the female gender I contemplated what would interest me, and what articles I would like to see in your magazine that would motivate me to read the magazine.
I believe your female readership would enjoy insightful articles relating to women's issues and how they pertain to Ukrainian woman of today. Many ideas came to mind.

I think that your magazine would benefit greatly from a section dedicated to women's issues and in every issue one article should appeal to your female readership. I also believe your larger male population would enjoy these articles as well.

Sincerely,
Suzanne Tonna
Kyiv

Editor's Note:
The survey was of our Opinion Leaders, a group of about 350 men and women. Most come from the business community, where there are still fewer women in senior managerial positions than men. That explains why the ratio of men to women in the survey was rather lopsided. We believe that our general readership is more representative of the general English-speaking population. Nevertheless, we welcome readers' views and take all suggestions seriously.
