Committee Work Valued

Despite a belief that decisions made by a committee tend to produce the equivalent of two-headed camels, respondents to The Willard Group's Opinion Leader Survey aren't at all dismissive of committee work done by the capital's business associations.

This month, we asked our growing Committee of 350 Opinion Leaders for their take on the value presented by the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine (AmCham) and the European Business Association (EBA). We found that half our respondents belong to one of the organizations and that about one in four pay dues to both.

The opportunities for committee work and networking that the groups provide was listed as the most important reason to join by 32 percent of respondents, followed by 30 percent who value the information made available to members. In fact, 60 percent of respondents felt that the groups' committee work was useful.

Information, committee work and social opportunities were cited as the top three reasons to be involved in AmCham and the EBA.

Only 13 percent of our respondents said they joined the organizations as a effective way to lobby the Ukrainian government, and about a third of those polled said the organizations weren't seen as terribly influential by the government.

About half the respondents whose companies hold membership in at least one of the organizations rated the group as being a good or excellent value for the money; 13 percent indicated that they felt they did not get their money's worth.

While our Opinion Leader Survey is not a scientific poll, it may help association leaders as they strive to create more value for members.
