  • It was in January 990 A.D. that Russia adopted the Julian calendar.

  • On January 9, 1569, Czar Ivan IV murdered St. Philip of Moscow, primate of the Russian Orthodox Church. The Czar was also known as Ivan the Terrible.

  • On January 10, 1994, Ukraine pledged to give up its nuclear arsenal, the third largest in the world.

  • Composer Reinhold Gliere was born in Kyiv on January 11, 1875.

  • Born on January 17, 1978, Irina A. Borisova went on to become Miss Ukraine-Universe in 1996.

  • On the same day in 1915, Russia occupied Bukovina (now northern Romania) and Western Ukraine.

  • Violinist Mischa Elman was born on January 20, 1891 in Talnoye, Ukraine.

  • and on January 22, 1918, Ukraine was proclaimed a free republic - though the Soviet Union interrupted that for a while

  • On January 23, 2002, Ruslan Ponomariov won the FIDE World Chess Championship, becoming the youngest world champion in history at age 18. Born in Horlivka, Ukraine, he became the youngest chess grand master in history in 1998 at age 14.

  • Ukrainian geneticist and writer Theodosius Dobzhansky was born on January 25, 1900. He wrote "Mankind Evolving."

  • Native Odessa playwright Valentin Katayev was born January 28, 1897. He wrote "Embezzled."

  • That same day in 1951 marks the birth of Ukrainian-born cosmonaut Leonid Konstantynovych Kadenyuk, who flew on U.S. space shuttle mission STS-87.

  • On January 28, 1942, Soviet Marshal Timoshenko's troops moved into Ukraine.

  • and January 31, 1920 was the day that the first Ukrainian daily newspaper was published in the United States. Where? Why, New York, N.Y., of course.
