 Women in the Workplace
|
No one can accuse our 400-Plus opinion leaders of being sexist. According to the results of this month's mini poll, dedicated to International Women's Day, most consider female employees and colleagues just as good or better than their mail counterparts.
Having said that, a full 86% say gender wouldn't play any role in a hiring decision. And if they had already made up their minds to hire someone of the fair sex, it probably wouldn't matter whether she was knock-out beautiful or "unattractive and unkempt." Our electronic survey did, however, detect some differences in the way female employees are perceived once on the job: Over 60% of respondents gave women higher points for punctuality, tidiness or industry. None thought they were more honest or loyal.
It would seem that women make up more of our opinion leaders' total employees - yet hold slightly less of the senior management positions. As far as salaries, always a sticky point, more than half of respondents denied one or the other sex got more or less; almost a quarter said they had never checked.
And what about the difference in professionalism between Ukrainian and Western female colleagues? Seventy percent said that there was no difference or that the gap was closing fast. Another persistent stereotype is that men are better at certain jobs. Here our opinion leaders slipped a little: more than half would rather have a male IT specialist, driver or (especially) security guard. When it comes to office romance, respondents were especially conservative: almost 70% said "No Way."
