This is a great way to support junior rugby. John Marsh, the man for whom the tournament is named, was a longtime supporter of the sport of rugby and while in Ukraine was very active in his support for junior rugby.
Many expats remember John well. He was a most well-respected member of our community. The day of the tournament will be a day of fond memories and celebration for all who had the pleasure of his company.
Anthony Nichol, a coordinator for the raffle and the tournament in a letter to the editor of the UO had some further explanation as follows:
"As well as helping to develop the sport there is an added social benefit in that it helps to keep the kids off the streets. A sport like rugby also is a benefit to the children in that it will teach them other skills that will be useful in life e.g. teamworking, discipline, handling winning and losing, respect for the rules etc.
To try and encourage locals to get involved the message is "if you support us you can win prizes". The idea is to sell them over the period of the 6 Nations as this is when rugby people will be out and about in the pubs. The tournament will be in the autumn as usual and if we raise enough money we may help with other projects."
A further personal note from Anthony included:
"The idea behind it is, that for the first year we all put our hands in our pockets and contributed to the cost of the tournament. In the second year we got a couple of prizes and ran a raffle but it was mostly gang members who bought tickets. This year we are trying to expand the fund raising to increase the pot of money thus enabling the tournament to expand and also to try and establish the tournament as something that can continue in the future and last beyond us being in Kyiv."
