What Do You Miss Most From the Home Country?

Many expats come to Ukraine under contracts for a certain time period and some government employees likewise have a date certain for their departure. And there are some expats who are here with no plans for departure. No matter what the situation, almost every one has a yearning for something of home that is unavailable here in Ukraine.

In this month's Pub Poll, we queried a number of persons as follows:

"Most foreigners who spend any significant amount of time in Ukraine have something that they miss from their native country. What is there that you miss most here, and how do you go about filling that need?"

Claudia_Mejia.jpgFood is one of them. I really miss plantain (green banana). Also the weather (Summer forever). But most of all the parties with my whole family on the coffee plantation during Christmas time. All in the swimming pool, making barbeque, completely different from here. The only way to fill that need is just to enjoy what I have in Ukraine and be happy with the good memories from my country.

Claudia Mejia,
Director, Alphanow Ukraine Ltd.
In Ukraine nine years.
Interviewed at Arizona BBQ

Dave_Giles.jpg1. TV. Being from the UK, our TV is actually good. Especially documentaries.
2. Football! I miss watching Scottish football. 3. Decent vegetarian food. We don't do salo. 4. We do not miss expensive alcohol and expensive CDs and DVDs. We make up for all this by emphasizing the best of Kyiv. We have developed a love of fresh vegetables, fruit and obscure salads from Volodymyrska market.

Dave Giles,
British Embassy. In Ukraine 2.4 years. Interviewed at the embassy garden party

Lynn_Rocks.jpgGoing to see the mighty Celtics, my dog, salt and vinegar crisps and Tunnock's caramel wafers. I fill the need by spending a fortune on flights.

Lynne Rocks,
British Embassy. In Kyiv 20 months. Interviewed at embassy garden party

Stuart_Jones.jpgMy friends, but I've made a lot of new friends here.

Stuart Jones,
